PERSPECTIVES OF INTERPRETATION

A three-day symposium was held in Jos, the Capital of Plateau State from 13th to 15th October, 2000, under the auspices of the Open Press Ltd, a Zaria based publishing firm. The theme of the event was “Problems and Perspectives of Interpretation of the Babangida Regime and the Period between 27th August 1985 and 26″ August, 1993”.

The purpose of the event was to provide a platform for scholars, researchers and writers the opportunity to subject General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and his regime to objective searching analysis to discover the explanations behind the facts that required going beyond the narration of stories and static description of events.

The ultimate aim was to produce to produce for our present and future generations, a treasure-house of a meticulously researched data on General Babangida and his regime that goes beyond a mere enumeration of writers and their writings, but to open up the intellectual history of his factor in Nigerian history and relate it to the intellectual history of the larger international community. It was also hoped that the data would help develop a whole new range of literature for researchers and scholars to rely upon to write about the underlying principles and structural forms of the life of General Babangida’s administration; and to generate theoretical formulations in areas of political, social and economic problems.

The high quality of participation and the caliber of people who attended the symposium made it one of the most unique events in recent Nigerian history. What was initially going to be a quiet symposium of 40-50 participants suddenly-generated wide and considerable interest across Nigeria and beyond. The participation itself took various characteristics, which have been absent in our national life in recent times. The symposium attracted participants of all ethnic and geographical origins and social and cultural backgrounds.

The chapters hosted under different subjects under this menu are select papers presented at the symposium by different scholars from various intellectual and scholarly backgrounds. They provide a critical but scientific and objective analysis of events, issues and problems, which characterized the Babangida regime by putting them in a proper historical and intellectual perspective. They also provide a firsthand source and reference material to political and social scientists on how Nigeria was governed between 1985 and 1993.
